Why a crossbow?

Crossbows are legal during Wisconsin’s full archery season, and they’re easier to pick up than a compound bow. If you can shoulder a rifle, you can shoot a crossbow accurately with a little practice. They’re also a great option for hunters with shoulder injuries or anyone who wants a shorter learning curve.

Speed and power

Crossbow speed is measured in feet per second (FPS). For whitetail deer, anything in the 350+ FPS range delivers plenty of energy at ethical hunting distances. Faster bows shoot flatter, which means less guesswork on range estimation — but they also cost more and can be louder. Match the bow to your hunting style, not the spec sheet.

Draw weight and cocking

This is the spec beginners overlook. A 200-pound draw weight is serious business — make sure your bow has a rope cocker or, better yet, a crank cocking device. Your shoulders will thank you after a long day in the stand.

What comes in the box matters

A good starter package should include the crossbow, a scope, bolts, a quiver, and a cocking aid. Buying the package is almost always cheaper than piecing it together, and everything is matched to work together.

Practice before the season

Sight in your crossbow at the distances you’ll actually hunt — most Wisconsin treestand shots happen inside 30 yards. Practice from an elevated position if you can, and always use a proper target rated for crossbow speeds.
